Should You Home School Your Kids?

They say education is the best gift you can give to your children, but it comes in different forms. The most obvious school options are private schools, public schools and home schools. You have to weigh the pros and cons of all these options before making a choice. When it comes to homeschooling, here are the advantages and disadvantages.

Advantages of Homeschooling

When you decide on homeschooling, you are able to work with your child on a personalized schedule. This is advantageous because children learn best in different schedules, but this is not something formal schools can handle. Whether your children works best in the morning or afternoon hours, you will be able to accommodate their schedules.

Another benefit of homeschooling is that you can be flexible in your time. For example, if you have a family gathering, a vacation or if one of the family members falls ill, your kids do not have to continue learning through the special occasion. You can’t do this with a public school.

There is also the issue of flexibility of the school subjects. As you know, formal schools have rigid subjects that all learners are required to take. At home, however, you can emphasize whichever subjects you like, and in your preferred combination. Moreover, there are great options, such as, which you can use as sources of homeschooling curriculum.

Disadvantages of Homeschooling

One of the hardest things with homeschooling is time management. It is not very easy to get all the time you need to teach your kids. Moreover, it is not only the tutoring; you also need time for research, practicals, field trips and such like things. Formal schools, on the other hand, have people responsible for these things.

In homeschooling, you are doomed if you do not normally have firm control over your kids. You might find yourself shouting your voice hoarse, running after unruly kids and generally tiring yourself without accomplishing much. If you have to do the house chores to, you can easily be overwhelmed.

Finally, you should face up to the fact that homeschooling can really mess up with your personal space and time. As a normal human being, you need some quit time to yourself for relaxation and rejuvenation. You will also be under a lot of pressure to perform and justify your need for opting for homeschooling. Some parents have even found themselves comparing their kids’ performances with the performances of other kids, something that is not easy to do.

Whatever you choose, remember that all parents homeschool their children. When they are at home they are learning what you are teaching them by your example.
